Where to stay on a sheep and beef farm in New Zealand?
Ripples Retreat sits on our 3rd-generation sheep and beef farm in Piopio, Waitomo — with two hand-built riverside cabins, private farm walks, seasonal lambs and peaceful nature all around you.
Which cabin will be best for us?
Both cabins offer something special. River Song is perfect for couples and small families wanting to be right on the river with that gorgeous four-poster bed. Cascade is best for families wanting two bedrooms, more space, and a large outdoor entertaining area. If you're unsure, message us and we’ll match you to the perfect stay.
Are your cabins pre-fabricated?
No — both cabins are fully hand-built by our family over thousands of hours. Every detail has been crafted and designed by Trudy to create a warm, personal, uniquely New Zealand stay.
Internet – Connecting while you're there
Yes, we provide free Wi-Fi at both cabins. Great for browsing, emails and light streaming — but you'll probably find the river and scenery more entertaining. There’s no TV, so staying here becomes a peaceful digital detox.
Is food provided or do we bring our own?
Ripples Retreat is self-catered, so please bring you food. Both cabins have full kitchens with everything you need. Most guests grab supplies on the way and enjoy slow meals on the decks overlooking the river. We do supply tea, coffee, espresso coffee, sugar, 250 mls milk.
What are the kitchen facilities?
Both cabins include a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, oven, cooktop, microwave, kettle, toaster, pots, pans, utensils, plates and cleaning supplies. Cascade has extra bench space, a larger dining area and an outdoor kitchen.
How do I cancel my booking? Can I get a refund?

What should we do when we stay?
You'll receive our Curated 10-Day Adventure Guide plus a full pre-arrival booklet. Waterfalls, beaches, caves, stargazing, hidden gems and river swims — many guests stay 3–5 nights to fit in everything.
How do we get to you?
We're located on our family farm in Piopio, Waitomo — 15 minutes from the village, 1 hour from the West Coast beaches, and 1.5 hours from Hamilton Airport. Full directions are included in your check-in guide.
What do I need to bring?
Just your clothes, food and personal items. We supply linen, towels, bathroom amenities, kitchen essentials, heating and everything needed for a comfortable stay.
When and how do I pay?
A 50% deposit secures your booking. The remaining 50% is charged automatically 21 days before arrival. Payment is made through our secure booking system.
How close is Ripples Retreat to the International Airport?
We’re under 3 hours from Auckland Airport and around 1 hour 15 minutes from Hamilton Airport.
What do I do if I have booking issues?
Message or call us — we live on the farm and reply quickly. We can help with changes, payment questions and stay planning.
Where is the nearest supermarket and petrol station?
Piopio (15 mins) has a Four Square, petrol station and cafés. Te Kuiti (25 mins) has New World and more shops. Full details are in your pre-arrival guide.
Are children allowed?
Absolutely. Ripples Retreat is very family-friendly. The river is shallow in many areas, and there's plenty of space to explore. Children must be supervised near water. We do ask you to contact us if you have children under 5 years so we can make you aware of the water danger.
How many people can Ripples Retreat sleep in each cabin?
River Song sleeps 5.
Cascade sleeps 6.
Both cabins together sleep up to 11.
Is Ripples Retreat available for event hire?
We host small, quiet gatherings such as elopements, photography sessions and special stays. Larger events considered on request.
Is there an additional charge for more people?
Base rates cover the first two guests. Additional guests are charged per person per night.
Is there a minimum number of nights?
Yes — most of the year is a 2-night minimum, with 3–5 nights in peak seasons and holidays. And we sometimes offer last minute single nights
Do you offer gift vouchers?
Yes! Digital gift vouchers are available for birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions.
Can I bring my dog?
NO dogs due to being a working sheep and beef farm and many of our guests have allergies.
What time is check-in and check-out? How do we check in?
Check-in is 3pm, check-out is 10am. You'll receive a detailed arrival guide with directions and your lock box code.
Early check-ins are sometimes available on request.
Where is the nearest medical centre?
Te Kuiti has the nearest medical centre and pharmacy (25 mins). Always call 111 in an emergency.
Are there laundry facilities and will our sheets be ironed?
All linen is professionally cleaned. Guest laundry is not available, but we can assist with small loads for long stays.
How many nights can we stay for?
As long as you like — many guests stay 5–14 nights to explore waterfalls, caves, beaches and local attractions.
Can we fish here?
Yes! The Mangaotaki River has excellent trout fishing — and you’ll often have the river entirely to yourself.
What games does Ripples have?
We provide board games, cards and cosy indoor activities perfect for rainy days and evenings.
Will our stay be limited by power and hot water?
Not at all — both cabins have full power, gas hot water systems and modern appliances, reasonable use please.
Is the water safe to drink?
Yes — all water is UV-treated, filtered and delicious. Guests often comment on how good it tastes. please save the planet and do not bring plastic water bottles.

We build with natural materials, minimise waste, use efficient systems and protect our riverbank ecosystems. Staying here supports a family-run, environmentally conscious NZ farmstay.

Yes! Both River Song and Cascade Cabin are an easy, scenic drive to Waitomo Caves — perfect for weekend getaways, short breaks and exploring glowworms, waterfalls and wild beaches.

Yes — both our cabins feature beautiful outdoor baths. River Song has a riverside bath under the stars, and Cascade Cabin has a double outdoor bath beside the trees and night sky.
