FISHING

"Abundant trout and the best river for fishing in this area!"

Ripples Retreat Fishing .jpg

The Mangaotaki is a beautiful river that flows passed both cabins at Ripples Retreat. It is an  attractive river to fish flowing through some spectacular limestone country between high cliffs with an extensive length of easily accessible fishing water, well-suited to all fishing methods.

The river in this section mostly glides between clay banks though there are some interesting sections of faster water. The section is seldom fished as the access is much more difficult for the average fisherman but at Ripples you will have full access from your lawn and there are plenty of rainbow and brown trout. Spin fishing is the most popular method though there are some stretches which are of interest to the nymph, wet fly or dry fly angler.

The fishing season at Ripples Retreat is October - May and all year around a 5 minute drive downstream to below the upper Mangaotaki Bridge. You will need a valid New Zealand fishing license to fish here which can be purchased online.

We implement a catch and release policy at Ripples to ensure there's an ample supply of fish for everyone. The summer fishing of 2025 was plentiful, with our fish growing in size, including this stunning rainbow.

The tranquil Mangaotaki River which runs passed our retreat has both ;larger pools and shallow sections running over rocks. This makes it suitable for both fly and spin fishing. .

When you stay at Ripples Retreat, you'll enjoy access to the exclusive Taumangahau stream that flows through our private farm and into the Mangaotaki River. It's not just a beautiful fishing spot; it's a breathtaking natural setting with many cascading waterfalls.
